Book Review By JERRY FIGUEROA
At Home in Mitford
By Jan Karon
I have
to admit that when I got this title from my local library
I was expecting a easy to read book about country life with a hint
of something having to do with a church pastor. As it turns out
I was surprisingly enchanted by a wonderfully caring man who
happens to be pastor to a small church, owner of a giant dog, and
surrogate father to a boy who was without a family.
What astonished me - for a main-stream
book - was how central God and Scripture was to this man's daily life.
When he encountered a tough decision, he would mutter to himself, "Philippians 4:6, for Pete's sake!". His dog, Barnabas, would only obey Scripture. And one
rainy day, a stranger came into the Parish agonizing over God's
apparent disinterest in his life, Pastor Tim helped him come to
understand God's enjoyment of our lives and longing for a closer walk
with each one of us.
I happen to get the audio version of
this book such that I could listen to it during my 30 minute drive to
work - I recommend audio books if it suits your need. Of course,
this book has many elements that make a wonderful book, great
narration, loveable characters, and a mystery or two thrown in for
suspense. I'm looking forward to reading the next book,"A Light in the
Window".
